California Governor signs a law allowing NCAA athletes to get paid

NCAA – California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill into law allowing college athletes to hire basketball agents and make money from endorsements.

The law is set to take effect in 2023. Student-athletes will be able to promote products and companies.

“Every single student in the university can market their name, image and likeness; they can go and get a YouTube channel, and they can monetize that,” Newsom said. “The only group that can’t are athletes. Why is that?”

This law is groundbreaking and it will be going against the grain that’s at the very core of the NCAA’s philosophy that students should be earning their degrees while playing sports and not making money.

The bottom line here is that it will set a precedent and we will have to see if and how the NCAA will react to it in the coming days and weeks.
