Buducnost takes top spot in ABA League
The ABA League wrapped up Round 8 action of the 2019-20 season on Monday with one game. After the dust settled, KK Buducnost Voli Podgorica emerged as the lone team atop of the standings.
They secured their seventh victory of the season with a 65-60 home victory over a dangerous BC Partizan Belgrade team on Sunday. But it wasn’t just that one game that provided Buducnost the solo lead in the standings. A stunning upset win by KK Zadar over Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana 101-63 paved the way for Buducnost to rise above the rest of the herd.
What does this mean? Well, for starters, it means that the level of competition in the ABA League is at a crazy level this season. Even defending champions Crvena Zvezda Beograd are outside of the top-4 looking in with a 5-3 record.
Cedevita Olimpija and Primorska are sitting in second and third places, respectively. And with three teams sporting 5-3 slates, it’s still actually anybody’s game. Literally.
Buducnost secured their win over Partizan thanks to some impressive shooting from 2-point range as well as a strong effort working the glass to secure a 38-32 rebounding advantage.
Justin Cobbs led the way for the victors with 14 points, while Hassan Martin chipped in a 12-point, 12-rebound double-double.
The ABA League should be in for more exciting action as you can likely expect swings in leadership over the next several wings. Until then, Buducnost will wear the hats of the top dogs.
