Brose Baskets win 2013 German BBL title
The finals series between Brose Baskets Bamberg and EWE Baskets Oldenburg from Germany’s BBL culminated in a 3-0 sweep by Brose Baskets via a Game-3 91-88 overtime victory. It was a battle of titans as both teams were the ones that finished atop the BBL standings at the end of the regular season. This is Brose Baskets’ third straight German Bundesliga Championship (2011, 2012, 2013). They also captured the title in 2005 and 2007. This must truly have been their year as they also won the German Supercup this 2013.
EWE Baskets knew this was a do-or-die situation for their hopes of capturing the championship. They came out aggressive and even finished the first quarter with a small 17-13 lead. They kept their composure and stayed ahead at the half, 37-32. The home team stepped up their game in latter quarters and put up a strong challenge in the fourth, led by the efforts of Bostjan Nachbar (207 cm). Brose Baskets were able to force overtime via a putback by Maik Zirbes (208 cm) after a Casey Jacobsen (198 cm, Stanford’02) missed three-point attempt.
Brose Baskets Bamberg found offense from various sources, but it was the game-high 20 points of Bostjan Nachbar and his heroic effort in the second half that was truly a huge boost. Casey Jacobsen added 15 points and his fellow back-court mate Alex Renfroe (191 cm, Belmont’09) chipped in 14 markers of his own.
EWE Baskets were carried by a balanced effort from Chris Kramer (191 cm, Purdue’10), Adam Chubb (208 cm, Pennsylvania’04), and Dru Joyce (183 cm, Akron’07) who all finished the contest with 16 points apiece.
