Bologna crushes Milan and wins the Italian title after a 20-year drought
Virtus Bologna beat Olimpia Milan yesterday, 73-62, and swept the Italian Serie A finals 4-0. It is the 16th title for Bologna but the first in the last 20 years.
The relentless defense of Bologna was too much for Milan to handle as they were never able to score more than 77 points in any of the four final series games.
Bologna only ended third in the regular season while Milan was dominant and ranked first. Therefore, not winning the Italian title was unexpected and a big disappointment. Especially since Milan faced a similar disappointment earlier on in the Euroleague, where they qualified for the final four but fell to Barcelona in the semifinal. Thus, after an almost perfect season, Milan ended empty-handed.
On the other hand, Bologna had an impressive run at the end of the season and didn’t lose a single playoff game (10-0) record. They also played in the Eurocup cup and were undefeated during the regular season but stumbled in the semi-finals against Russian team UNICS Kazan.
