Benfica gears for three-peat this 2013-14
The Portuguese LPB opens tonight! Can Sport Lisboa Benfica capture that elusive “three-peat” and win their third Portuguese LPB Championship in a row this 2013-14 season? We shall find out soon enough. They will get a chance to get their season up and running on the right foot tonight as they prepare to battle it out tonight against Galitos-Tley.
The defending champs will be tested on opening night as they strive to answer some burning questions. The first of which is how well can they perform now that one of last season’s key players, LaceDarius Dunn (193 cm, Baylor’11), has left the team in favor of a spot with Polish club AZS Kozalin. Dunn was instrumental in their championship defense against Associacao Academica de Coimbra in 2012-13. Perhaps a greater emphasis on defense will be employed as anchored by Cape Verdean-Portuguese Defensive Player of the Year award winner Joao Gomes (201 cm). We will just have to wait and see what coach Carlos Lisboa has in store for us in his basketball bag of tactics and tricks.
