Bayern Munich shocked by Goettingen
Bayern Munich crashed to its first defeat of the German BBL season as visiting club BG Goettingen handed out the surprise of Round 5 with an 81-95 victory.
The reigning Bundesliga champions have been in good league form this season, winning their opening four encounters to sit third in the standings. Goettingen on the other hand have been indifferent and before this game sat in 14th with a poor 1-4 record. Perhaps Bayern Munich was suffering a hangover from a trip to Spain in the Euroleague on Friday, where they slipped to Barcelona.
That may be something head coach Pesic Svetislav may need to address as he aims to keep his players mentally fresh on all fronts.
Bayern Munich vs. Goettingen, 81-95
The Audi Dome was typically bouncing with Munich fans and they were treated to a winning first quarter from their club. It was a tight opening 10 minutes but the hosts outpaced Goettingen to hold a 20-17 lead at the first split. In the second quarter the visitors started to get hold of Bayern’s defensive spaces and while the home team kept scoring (19 points in Q2), Goettingen poured in 27 points to lead 39-44 at the long break.
Finding buckets was not a problem for Munich as they kept consistent at the basket, nailing 20 points through the third quarter. Defence was another issue though and Goettingen exploited the frailties to extend their lead to 59-67 after 30 minutes on court. A comfortable victory was completed for the away team in the ultimate stanza as they streamed in 28 points to end the game in style.
Khalid El-Amin secured 20 points and 8 assists for Goettingen in a classy attacking display, while Harper Kamp and Alex Ruoff hit 13points apiece.
Nihad Djedovic paced Bayern Munich with 19 points, 5 boards, and 3 assists. Dusko Savanovic scored 16 points in the losing effort and Anton Gavel has 13 points and 6 dimes.
