Bayern Muenchen Wins BBL Crown
FC Bayern Muenchen returns to the top of the German BBL podium in 2018 after defeating ALBA Berlin 106-85 in Game 5 of the final series. This is a huge win for the franchise that last tasted gold in 2014. They were pushed to the limit by a tough and competent ALBA Berlin club. Germany’s Bundesliga is one of the most competitive basketball leagues in Europe and the back-and-forth these two teams delivered in the finals was nothing short of monumental.
Bayern Muenchen started out strong in this decisive game. They dominated their guests 32-19 at the end of the first quarter and looked composed. They went to their bread and butter, which was to pound the ball in the post. Bayern Muenchen’s offense was in overdrive. They shared the ball well which resulted in six players ending the night scoring in double figures. They posted 29 assists in this game, compared to 14 from ALBA Berlin. Nihad Djedovic led all Bayern Muenchen scorers with 19 points, which he compiled in just 17 minutes on the floor.
In contrast, ALBA Berlin leaned heavily on their star player Spencer Butterfield who dropped a game-high 29 points. His valiant heroics would not be enough to carry ALBA Berlin to victory. This is yet another testament to how well-executed teamwork can trump individual effort, especially in a team sport like basketball.
