Basketball Attraction in Fiji
BASKETBALL Fiji (BF) is reaping the benefits of its development programs conducted over the past few years.
It has seen an increase in the number of teams competing in the Tuckers Ice Cream Secondary Schools Basketball League.
BF development officer Laisiasa Puamau said the increase in teams meant there would be a big increase in the player-base of the sport.
He said it was a positive sign for basketball and he was optimistic it would continue to grow.
“In this Suva league alone we have over 500 students taking part,” Puamau said.
“If we were to add schools in the west, then the number would be above 650.”
“This is a positive sign for basketball in Fiji as we can see that the sport is becoming attractive to school students.”
New schools in the Suva league include Queen Victoria School, Dudley High School, Dilkusha High School, DAV Girls College and Ratu Kadavulevu School will also enter a team.
Meanwhile, national under-19 reps are volunteering to ensure the league runs smoothly.
“They are contributing towards the competition that has brought them where they are today and Basketball Fiji is thankful to them for helping in the organising of the Tuckers Ice Cream Secondary Schools Basketball League.
“Brianna Kamsoo, Milikere Koymainavure and Filimoni Vulimailaucala are some of those who are volunteering in running the league,” Puamau said.
