Australian Boomers bag first FIBA Asia Cup title
The Australian Boomers capped off an amazing 2017 FIBA Asia Cup showing by bagging the gold medal after defeating Iran in the final, 79-56. This was a particularly noteworthy feat for the Australians, who did not field any of the players from the Rio Olympics. Instead, a group of young players was assembled from their NBL pro league to compete in this event. The Aussies were unstoppable throughout this tournament, blowing out all of their competition to finish with a pristine, undefeated record. South Korea managed to trump New Zealand earlier in the day to secure the bronze medal.
The Boomers went on an early 12-2 run and were never really at any risk of relinquishing either their lead or control over the game. Brad Newley of the Sydney Kings, led the green shirts with 18 points. Daniel Kickert chipped in 14 points for the winners.
Despite the impressive performance put forth by the Australian contingent, none of the players were named to the tournament’s All-Star Five. Iran’s Hamed Haddadi was named MVP of the tournament.
