Australia Bags Gold at Commonwealth Games
Gold Coast, Australia – The Australian Boomers took home the gold medal for men’s basketball at the recently concluded Commonwealth Games on Sunday . They completely outplayed and outclassed the Canadian squad in an 84-47 blowout victory. The Canadians may have been clear underdogs in this game, but they did muster up some valuable momentum heading into the Finals with stunning victories over the United Kingdom and New Zealand in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively.
Despite being without some of their key stars, due to international commitments, Australia led over their guests in every statistical category. The Boomers were missing Ben Simmons of the Philadelphia 76ers and Joe Ingles of the Utah Jazz, just to name a couple, with both teams currently battling it out in the NBA playoffs.
In the end, Chris Goulding led the way for Commonwealth Games champions with 11 points. Nathan Sobey and Nicholas Klay chipped in 10 points apiece.
“Happy to bring a few more guys in and come away with a Commonwealth gold. It’s something I never thought I would do as a child. I don’t really have a ladder of when and where, but I’ve had a few big weeks, really happy.” – Goulding
Munis Tutu was the only Canadian player to score in double digits with 10 points.
