ASVEL wins 2019 French Pro A championship
After a gruelling five-game finals series vs. AS Monaco ASVEL has emerged victorious and are the 2019 French Pro A champions. They came away with a convincing 66-55 win over Monaco in a decisive Game 5 on Tuesday.
The last time ASVEL stood atop of the winners’ podium was in 2016, so it’s a sweet return to glory for the franchise. After all, it was no small task to best the 2018 finalists. ASVEL had a strong 2018-19 campaign in the French Pro A, finishing atop of the regular season standings with a laudable 27-7 record.
The victors put up a big 24-6 run in the third quarter to blow the game wide open and did not look back. Monaco, who had been in control and even were nursing a double-digit lead, was scrambling and appeared lost in the flurry of plays as ASVEL marched on to victory. ASVEL found a way to connect on timely 3-point shots and those paved the way for the shift in the game’s momentum.
ASVEL got a lot of their players involved in the action. Miro Bilan and A.J. Slaughter paced the team with 11 points each. Monaco was led by Lazeric Jones and Dee Bost, who chipped in 13 points apiece.
This was a great night for French hoops. Fans now move on after celebrating this French Pro A championship and set their sights on the upcoming FIBA World Cup to cheer on their national team in China.
