Basketball fans were able to welcome 2018 with a bang, as the 7Days EuroCup Top 16 got underway on January 2nd. Six teams took to the hardwood for some amazing international basketball action. In the end, the home teams were able to stand tall on their own turf with some dominant wins.
Herbalife Gran Canaria vs. ALBA Berlin, 100-81
Herbalife drew first blood in Group E with a convincing thumping of their visiting German guests. It was all systems go as Gal Mekel orchestrated a well-executed offense for Gran Canaria with 19 points and six assists. It was a great show of force with their offense operating in a smooth flow, the yellow shirts shot an amazing 55 percent with five of their players scoring in double figures.
FIAT Torino vs. FC Bayern Muenchen, 90-76
FIAT Torino enjoyed home comforts with an easy victory over a formidable Bayern Muenchen squad. Little could be done by the German club as Diante Garrett and Lamar Patterson torching them for a combined seven triples. Garrett led all FIAT scorers with 21 points and eight assists.
Bayern Muenchen put up an admirable effort, posting a double-double with 17 points and 11 boards. Unfortunately, his heroics were not enough as the Turin defense adjusted and collapsed on him on every play, forcing him to commit six turnovers for the game.
Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia vs. Limoges CSP Elite, 87-54
While the two other games were all about offense, this one was about defense. Grissin Bon RE smothered their guests with some impressive D. Limoges was stifled on almost every play, with none of their players able to muster enough offense to clip the double-figure scoring mark. On the other hand, Amedeo Della-Valle of Grissin Bon dropped a game-high 22 points, nine rebounds and four assists for an overall impressive performance.
