EuroBasket 2017: Spain and Slovenia make Final Four
The Quarterfinals of EuroBasket 2017 opened on Tuesday with two contests, before the round is settled on Wednesday with a further two games. In the Last Eight today, reigning champs Spain remained on course to defend its title and entered the medal games with a narrow win over Germany.
In the other game, Slovenia outlasted Latvia in a game between two EuroBasket 2017 dark horses. The result sends Slovenia into the Final Four for the first time since 2009.
Spain vs. Germany, 84-72
Germany had the better of the first quarter and raced into a 19-16 lead through ten minutes. Spain soon got a handle on the game and used a 14-18 run in the second frame to lead by a point at halftime, 33-34. The champs carried the momentum into the third act and drained 31 points while stopping Germany at 20 to make it 53-65 through thirty minutes. Spain held on through the fourth and maintained its 12-point advantage at the closing buzzer.
Marc Gasoline doubled up with 28 points and 10 rebounds for Spain, while brother Pau added 19 points.
Dennis Schroeder stood tall for the Germans with 27 points and 8 assists.
Slovenia vs. Latvia, 103-97
A high scoring contest saw 200 points fall in this EuroBasket 2018 quarter final. Slovenia stole victory in the end thanks to a consistent second half. Latvia went the distance but was undone by inconsistency, blazing one quarter and slumping the next. Slovenia enters the medal games for the first time and thanks to heavy scoring will feel the team can go the distance. The game was a festival of scoring and showed the excitement of the European game, an excellent advert to show global basketball fans what European hoops is all about.
Luka Doncic was immense in victory with 27 points and 9 boards, while Goran Dragic managed 26 points and 8 assists.
Kristaps Porzingis was the high scorer of the day with 34 points to drive Latvia.
