Euroleague: CSKA Moscow makes is five unbeaten
The fifth round of the Euroleague Regular Season continued on Thursday with a big showing from CSKA Moscow. The Russian club traveled to Olympiacos and came away from Greece with a win. Also with the winning feeling was Brose Baskets, which played out a classic encounter with Milan. Real Madrid’s steady progress continued with a solid home win over out of luck Galatasaray.
Olympiacos Piraeus vs. CSKA Moscow, 75-81
CSKA Moscow is cruising through the Euroleague Regular Season so far. The reigning champs faced a tough trip to former champion Olympiacos, but defeated the Greek powerhouse to take sole possession of first in the standings. After Fenerbahce’s slip yesterday, CSKA Moscow is now the only unbeaten team in the competition, boasting a 5-0 record.
Olympiacos drops to 3-2 after this loss, and will be lamenting an awful second quarter. The hosts managed just 7 points in the frame, allowing CSKA into the long break with a 28-44 advantage. It was damage control for the Greeks in the second half as CSKA Moscow cruised to victory.
Nando De Colo was a driving force for the Army Men with 23 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 assists. Aaron Jackson added 15 points in the win, while Nikita Kurbanov plundered 13 points.
Georgios Printezis had his best game of the season in the losing effort, scoring a game high 26 points and adding 7 boards. Vassilis Spanoulis continued his solid form with 14 points and 7 rebounds.
Brose Bamberg vs. EA7 Emporio Armani Milan, 106-102
Brose Bamberg edged a thrilling clash in Germany, a Euroleague classic that went to an overtime period and ended in a huge score. Victory gets Bamberg back to winning ways and pushes the club to 2-3, while Milan is now sitting on the same record, but is nursing three consecutive losses. It could have been different for the Italians, who led 61-64 through three quarters.
Bamberg rallied in the fourth to tie the game 91-91 at the end of regulation time. The hosts carried the momentum into overtime and put Milan away for good to seal the win.
Darius Miller topped the win with 27 points and 5 rebounds, while Nicolo Melli added 15 points and 9 boards. Leon Radosevic scored 13 for Bamberg and Nikos Zisis notched 13 points.
Rakim Sanders delivered 25 points for Milan, followed by Alessandro Gentile with 18 points and Jamel McLean with 17 points and 9 rebounds.
Real Madrid vs. Galatasaray Istanbul, 90-81
Real Madrid collected its fourth win of the season to move joint second with Fenerbahce with a 4-1 record, while putting huge pressure on Eurocup champ Galatasaray. The Turkish club has yet to pick up a win at 0-5, the only club in the competition yet to taste success. At times tonight, it looked as though the Istanbul contingent would break its bad luck.
However, despite Galatasaray leading 45-47 at halftime, Real Madrid recovered with a consistent second half to secure an important home win.
Sergio Llull was in hot touch for Los Blancos and finished with 23 points, while Rudy Fernandez added 13 points in the win.
Vladimir Micov scored 16 points for the Turks, followed by Alex Tyus with 14 points and 8 rebounds.
