2015 Euroleague Final Four heads to Madrid
Spanish capital Madrid has been named as the host city for the 2015 Euroleague Final Four, to be held between May 15 and 17 2015. The showpiece event of the European Basketball season will be held at Real Madrid’s Palacio de Deportes de la Comunidad de Madrid, it was announced just before the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Championship Game Press Conference.
It will be the first time the Euroleague Final Four has visited Madrid since 2008, and during that event CSKA Moscow lifted the title for the sixth time. It will be the sixth time the Euroleague championship game has been held in Madrid, and both Real Madrid and the Palacio de Deportes have a storied past in the competition. Los Blancos are the most successful team in Euroleague history and the club will fight for another title in this year’s Final Four in Milan.
The Palacio de Deportes is one of the premier Basketball arenas in Europe and the world. A fully functional sports facility, the arena was opened in 2005 after fire destroyed the original venue in 2001. In its various carnations, the 15,000 capacity hall has played host to some of the most memorable nights in Spanish and continental Basketball.
Euroleague Basketball President and CEO Jordi Bertomeu was joined by the Community of Madrid’s sports and youth general director, Pablo Juan Salazar for the announcement. Mr. Bertomeu stressed the reasons why Madrid was a perfect venue for the 2015 Euroleague Final Four.
This year had many candidates interested in welcoming the Final Four, but we have decided to return to Madrid, because it fulfils all the requirements of being a great host city,” Mr. Bertomeu said. “It is a European capital with easy access in a well-connected central location. Madrid has a great arena in the city center. It is a basketball city with a huge basketball fan base, which has filled the arena for every Turkish Airlines Euroleague game played there. And Spain is one of our strategic markets.
